swim lessons

This is our first summer with official swim lessons. Our friend Sheila is giving the boys individual lessons. Matty is working on kicking and blowing bubbles...simultaneously. he is getting more comfortable in the water and even jumped off the edge by himself--into Sheila's arms.

This is Cody the dog. Matty enjoys bossing him around. David enjoyed making a new friend.

David isn't so sure about the big pool. He is much happier to splash around in the jacuzzi. He gets cold easily, so he is more comfortable in the warm water. He even floated on his back with Sheila's help.

It will still take time before Matty is water-safe. I'm not sure David will ever be water-safe, but if he is comfortable in the water, that would be a big step.

I love swimming lessons. It's such a pleasure to have a front row seat in watching your child learn from someone else. And it's so great to see the progress. Tons of fun!

That picture of David crying just breaks my heart. I'm glad he enjoys the jacuzzi. I agree--to make David water comfortable is important. So much fun can be had in the water and I want him to enjoy splashing around.

It's so hard to see your kids cry during swim lessons, isn't it? Matty looks like he's doing great though!

Our 4-year old daughter is also taking swim lessons right now... she LOVES the water and being in Florida it is foolish for her not to learn how to swim well!

I'm not water-comfortable, so I applaud you for having your kids take lessons.

How neat! I'd like to have all our kids get swimming lessons. We did try Ben in our local YMCA swimming pool once and he liked it about as much as David did in your photo.

I've never put Baylee in swimming lessons, but she LOVES the water. Now at age 12, she actually has some acceptable swimming skills and it's one recreational activity she can participate in without any adaptive help or direction. She just let her loose and she could play in the pool for HOURS. When she was younger, she wore a My Pool Pal swimsuit. They are great for kids with special needs. I think that's what gave her enough confidence to relax and enjoy the water. Now she just swims with a regular suit. I don't know what we'll do when the pool closes for the season...she'll miss it SO much. From our visits to the hotel pool at the CdLS conference, I could clearly see that water is a great love of most kids with CdLS.
